Maybe we should move back out to the woods, live in the trees & start wiping our asses with moss again. Now thats real progress.

Here's the quick dumbs#!t version: No matter how noble your intentions, it takes money to do anything. People make investments so that they won't have to hope things will magically come to them for free when they can't work anymore. Banks often actually have to do a fair bit of work sourcing small funds from lots of people in order to lend large amounts to a few- so that useful things can actually be done. In the real world, people need housing and some way of paying for it. And everybody has to get something out of the process because everybody puts some amount of work or bear some risk. The information and other things companies produce take labour and capital. Companies have to make it worthwhile for those that provide them- they have to offer providers a more attractive proposition than obtainable elsewhere. Despite whatever ideals you might have, even the most brilliant innovations involve the time, money and risk of parties other than the minds directly involved. Companies have these things called responsibilities. No, actually they are obligations. Ideals go out the window in the imperfect world of those that have all those balancing acts to perform.

Companies are not magical omniscient forces of malevolence. They are staffed with hard-working people who need to eat, pay their bills and feed their families. People who developed skills and made real life choices on the basis of incentives. They are funded by people with the same goals- although perhaps many investors are simply better organised, more successful and generally a little further down the road than the so called salt-of-the-earth-working-clas s-hero. It isn't a crime in itself to be organised and successful is it? We can't all just hope our governments do it all for us by running idealistically palatable welfare states that eventually end up like Greece now can we?

On the topic of intellectual property. There are some laws we can't all agree with. Does creating something make it yours? Well, it isn't yours to give to the world for free if you didn't do it alone. Mental effort isn't the only contribution that entitles you to a stake in something. And there's a pretty thick line between patenting a gene and putting DRM on a song or a game. Those without a stake would simply be freeloading drags on society if they got everything for free. Funny how ideals and responsibilities clash in real life.

Hacking, stealing and destroying involve skills that are not on the same level as creating and innovating. It is easier to find one weakness than it is to build something that stands under any condition at all. It is certainly not as valuable.

If the rule of law and governments as we knew it were gone, would geographical, racial, ideological and territorial boundaries really just disappear? We all have faith that these forces would just cede power to a internet connected hive. A magical neural network without control of actual limbs... Wankery!
