What I don't get is the design thing. Apple were not the first to do the square design and also isn't the big issue about consumers getting confused between the two. Well if someone can mistake a Samsung phone for and iphone when the logos are not only completely but the phones themselves have visible differences ( I managed to by my iphone without getting mixed up with a Samsung one). I do not mind them wanting a ban on products that have apple patented tech inside the device but the way it looks??? Abusing the system

But what you don't get is that lately, every android is coming with the front and rear camera, volume buttons, home button, speakers and pretty much everything on the same position (same look) that Apple is doing it. Every time apple invent something, new way to use things (like new interface), functions and even products, you see smart phones coming the same way... Just like the iPhone 4, we were used to see black phones (most of them), but once apple came with a white phone, now new phones are coming white, not that apple invented the white color, but the point is that not one uses something until Apple start with it. Conclusion? Copying apple

You will see apple with a new phone with no buttons at all (if they do)... Watch all the other companies doing that after that.

I had devices that were white and had built in speakers way before ipods and iphobes dude and volume buttons on the upper left side. The only thing I give apple credit for is front and rear camera.

look at this and tell me if that doesn't look like an iPhone 4 to you design-wise! and it's WHITE! Samsung released this in 2009 and iPhone 4 was announced in 2010!

stop being blind! Apple is not 1st to make a smartphone and definitely not the 1st to design something rectangular with rounded corner! but they are certainly the 1st to abuse the design patent for this design! typical Apple patent trolling!

Google now owns motorola and that is one of the companies apple has been picking on. Just read a article yesterday about how google is now suing apple and have plans to get every ipod, iphone, and ipad banned.

Now will something that extreme happen? No. Will apple run back to California with it's tail between it's legs? If there is one company on this planet that can do it, it's google.

@evil_element you are delusional if you think apple isnt doing the same. You don't need an email, social network, etc to do this, a simple music provider, browser, and closed propietery abilities is all you need. Apple fits all of those very nicely.

Now I'm not defending google, but right now the enemy of my enemy is your friend, certainly applies. apple needs to be crushed, and google has a patent powerhouse in motorolla.

Yea apple is doing the same. It is also a lot easier to get around this with android, one of the main things being DON'T install the play store.Also get orbot (TOR for android).

This will turn your android cell phone into one of the most anonymous cellular devices around.

You can't blame a specific company for "spying" on you these days. Sadly it's the type of society we live in where it goes unquestioned and almost universally required. If you want true anonymity, you have to do it yourself.

I hate to say it but I think it's quite obvious how much more the US government will be in a police state in even 5 years.

amazing how the EU, neither american or asian found nothing wrong with Samsungs devices over the exact same issues.

Samsung = iphone launched, releases identical 'smartphones' 6 months later

Google = controls all your private information (google, youtube, g+, gmail), copies iOS with Android, still manages to surface as a hero

Apple = began the virtual music distribution, began the smartphone revolution, began the tablet revolution, guilty of being scumbag and a shitty company

It's mainstream to hate Apple without any reason nowadays. Macbooks are great (try to be any kind of designers without one), iPhone are great as well (a bit overpriced, but samsung's arent cheap either), iPods were the shit back in the day and eventhough I don't like the iPad (or tablets overall), Apple brought back the tablets (called PDA's a couple of year's back), right when the industry and the technology was ready for it.

But still they suck. Patents are a awfull business, but Google and Samsung have sued Apple before. It's a common thing. But since Apple is winning this 'war', it seems it's the villain here.

Apple did not begin the virtual music distribution. Millions of people were doing that on Napster years before the ipod was at retail. Hell, apple didn't even have the first mp3 player. But great marketing, and timing, helped the ipod. Integrating itunes also made it easy. Very easy.

There were plenty of smartphones before the iphone. Hell, I had one. But the iphone's main OS was already basicly created with the ipod touch. They just added phone functionality. Which was genius, I'll give them that, due to the popularity of the ipod. Same itune syncing.

There were other tablets on the market before ipad, but none looked as good as the ipad so this agrument is moot, lol. There is really no discussion. They were basicly laptop parts put into THICK TABLET FORM. Ipad, which is just a BIG IPOD TOUCH killed them.

Apple is considered a $h!tty company because the stuff they try to pull, and the stuff they get away with, other companies, mainly Microsoft, have been sued for. Hell, Microsoft has been sued for alot less.

Microsoft was sued for putting msn search in internet explorer, even though you could change search providers. Apple makes it where you have to use itunes on all their products but they get away with it. Thats just one small example why I don't like the company. How do they get away with some of the stuff they do is beyond me. And to start trying to patent a shape, like a square or rectangle, is just dumb.

I do not have a problem with apple products. I think they are very nice. I have replaced many many many many ipod, iphone, and ipad screens. And I love the macbook air and the 12core mac pro. I might actually buy that mac pro, and just put windows on there.

Virtual music distribution most certainly was NOT started at the hands of Apple. Napster and Winamp pretty well started all that - granted that was "illegal distribution" but that's where the seeds were sown.

Ever hear of a company called Research in Motion? They may be struggling now but they really were the pioneers in the whole smart phone movement.

Tablets have been around for a dogs age they were just poorly executed. They did it more right than anyone else out there and they used the army of Apple loyalists and their marketing to make them more mainstream.

From one point of view, it's really unfair to patent shapes.

From another perspective, it's kinda interesting seeing all the drama and predicting the what the future holds.

Apple, the current tech "leader", had just given a big blow to its closest rival, Samsung. From the side we see the lesser mobile companies contemplating what had just happened and wondering how the event will affect them. And deep from the shadows, two giants are watching everything silently, learning what the others have been doing against Apple, bidding their time to strike. At one corner is MS and its staunch ally Nokia poised to launch their latest weapons soon. At another corner is Google and its newly acquired weapon, Motorola, is still prepping for a full out war. Good thing that Google had the foresight to send allies (Samsung and Android using friends) who have unwittingly became cannon fodder in order to study Apple's moves and reaction.
