Didn't these things sell out first day they were available for pre-order in Japan? That certainly doesn't sound like the internet blowing things out of proportion. Of course you're correct in saying we should wait and see how it does once launched, but to me it seems obvious from what we're seeing from Japan that there's strong consumer interest in this product. And why wouldn't there be? The things are a fantastic idea whether you want it for the games, the media streaming or just as an extender for your PS4. Any one of those things alone would be worth $100.

One of the main features of Vita TV is streaming PS4 games to a second TV. You're able to remote play PS4 games on your regular Vita but those don't have a TV out in case you wanted to hook them up to a larger screen. And yes, you would need a Vita TV for each TV, just like you currently need a cable box for each TV to use cable.

As for Vita games on the big screen I can't see it as being too much of an issue. Resolution of most Vita games are slightly less than 720p content you'd get on your screen so I can't see video quality being too much of an issue considering these things are only $100. PS4 remote play is scaled to 720p and the unit supports up to 1080i at the moment but I imagine that'll be bumped up to 1080p.

You're right that it's not a device for everyone, but if you want a PS4 extender, media player or just want to give your kids a cheap device they can throw on a TV in their room, these things will fly off the shelves like we saw with the day one sellout in Japan.
